Time For Parking Meters and One Way Traffic

Those of us whom use our own vehicles to traverse Bourbong Street know only too well the dodgem car mentality that is rampant from Kennedy Bridge to the rail line.
Council needs to well and truly bite the bullet and make some decisions on making the main shopping precinct of Bourbong Street 'user friendly'.
Get rid of the shop keepers and staff cars and install 1 hour parking meters and make the main part of Bourbong Street one way east to west.
One way traffic works exceptionally well in Adelaide and Brisbane and keeps everything flowing.
Shop keepers and  staff will get pretty sick, pretty quick putting a $1 in the meter every hour.
Development of parking in areas such as over the east side of Kennedy bridge is a natural development with plenty of land, non sporting of course, that is ready to be made for all day parking and, god forbid, shopkeepers and staff can walk to work from there.  Oh yeah and get healthy and the same time. Perhaps Council can give everyone who parks there a pedometer to encourage fitness.
Come on Council get real with the centre of town, encourage family friendly centre of City to combat the rise of the super malls such as Sugarland, Hinkler and the like, and come up with real solutions not repeat the sins of the past of countless other towns/city's across the country.

About bloody time there was some sense made about Bourbong St.

I work for an office in barolin street and a number of staff shift their cars four or five times a day to avoid walking from old dairy factory site.

Why not educate traders instead of penalising shoppers. Put 1 hour parking meters in and I will NEVER venture into Bourbong St again and I think I would be one of many with this attitude.

I have another idea. Instead of the poor shopkeepers and staff having to park and 'get exercise' when they go to the same place of work everyday, what about creating the parking over Kennedy Bridge as suggested but ask the customers to use that parking. Poor old workers and owners can actually have parking near their place of business like most companies. Where do you work Mal? Do you work? if so I bet anything you like you don't have to park over 2k's from your office everyday. Yes Bourbong St is a mess but get serious. If you don't have a real sensible suggestion why say anything.

Why can't the council build a high rise car park if the short term parking is such a problem in the CBD. Typical more revenue raising antics for people trying to find a park. Why should anyone have to pay for a park!!

Get with the times. People want the shopping, the services etc of a big city but you don't want what comes with it. People can scream 'progress', 'progress' as much as they want, but remember that with it comes the consequences of such. Parking and traffic control. Bundy is no longer the sleepy hollow it once was!

Hey, blogger with the high rise car park idea! You contradict yourself. First you say Council should build a high rise car park and then, you say, "Why should anyone have to pay for a park?" What do you think would happen if a high rise park was built, it certainly wouldn't be free.
Also a high rise will only attract more cars to the CBD, something we don't want. Public Transport is the answer not more cars!

Build a high rise parking structure, charge shoppers to park in it and make Bourbong pedestrian only.

What a great idea. Bourbong St for the people. Whatever comes from ideas, let's hope Council gets serious about the traffic issues. It took 1/2 hour to travel down Bourbong St yesterday 6/01/09 at 10am. How ridiculous was that!!

Multi storey parking just outside of the main CBD is a great idea, and keep Tantitha to Maryborough or Barolin as pedestrian only with street vendors and cafe's like Brisbane. And a lot more seeting and shade. The original one way idea also has merit but why not convert Woongarra and Quay street into two lane one ways with dedicated bicycle lanes? Creating a large loop around the city centre.
